    Non-decalcified Histology

Overview

The goal of the Weintraub Center Hard Tissue Lab is to provide high quality, undecalcified, plastic embedded biological specimens for histological and histomorphometric evaluation.  A custom designed lab space with unique equipment and supplies are available to achieve this goal.  It is staffed by Joyce Schumann who prepares the sections and trains others to utilize this process in their labs.

Procedure

Normally, fixed and grossly trimmed tissue specimens are submitted to the Hard Tissue Lab.  After discussion with the researcher for orientation and staining of final sections, the tissue specimen undergoes a series of treatments.  Plastic embedded specimens are further subjected to the EXAKT Cutting and Grinding System as follows:

  • Gross specimens are cut to approximately 5 mm thickness with the EXAKT cutting machine.
  • Gross sections are dehydrated and then infiltrated with Kulzer Technovit 7200, followed by embedding and polymerization in Technovit 7200.
  • Thin undecalcified sections are prepared using the EXAKT grinding machine.
Thin sections can also be stained.  A variety of staining procedures is available.  Selection of stain would be determined by tissue components to be demonstrated.

Fees

$300 - One stained slide including gross tissue cutting, fixation and embedding

$250 - One stained slide prepared from fixed tissue

Starting from $80 - Additional slide with staining

Other services are available such as cutting, milling, and staining separately.  Please contact Ms. Vicki Sandoval for details and corresponding fees.
