UCLA offers its incoming undergraduate freshmen a General Education Cluster series, spanning three quarters and designed to introduce students to multiple areas of knowledge. They are taught by some of the University’s most distinguished faculty, and are designed to strengthen the writing, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and information literacy skills that are essential for educational success. The Weintraub Center offers one of the UCLA’s most popular spring seminars, “Science of the Face,” taught by Ichiro Nishimura, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., Professor of Advanced Prosthodontics. Taught in the Weintraub Center Commons, students discuss classic reading materials such as Charles Darwin’s The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals to the latest medical journals, all related to the face. The majority of the enrollees major in non-science disciplines such as sociology, theater or literature. Therefore, the students’ experiences at the Weintraub Center may be their last in science education, and will hopefully leave an impression that will last for years to come.
