Educational and Professional Background
D.D.S., 1999, Osaka Dental University, Osaka, Japan
Ph.D., 2003, Graduate School of Dentistry, Osaka Dental University, Osaka, Japan
Dr. Akishige Hokugo received his dental degree (D.D.S.) in 1999 from Osaka Dental University in Japan. He then entered the Graduate School of Dentistry in the First Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the same university, where he received training in oral and maxillofacial surgery and research. He received his Ph.D. in 2003.
Dr. Hokugo was an oral surgeon in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Osaka Dental University Hospital in Japan from 1999 to 2004. He then worked as a COE researcher (postdoctoral research fellow) in the Department of Biomaterials at the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences of Kyoto University under the supervision of Prof. Yasuhiko Tabata from 2004 to 2006.
Dr. Hokugo was a postdoctoral research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2006 to 2008. He has also been a part-time lecturer in the First Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Osaka Dental University since 2003.
Dr. Hokugo is now a Postdoctoral Scholar under Dr. Ichiro Nishimura in the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology at the UCLA School of Dentistry.
Research/Creative Activities
In Japan, Dr. Hokugo researched biodegradable polymers and hydrogels and their medical and dental applications. He also focused on bone and gingival regeneration based on tissue engineering technologies and drug delivery systems. He was awarded the Scientific Award from the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2003 and a Poster Award at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Academy of Clinical Periodontology in2007. He published four Japanese, one US, one Australian and one European patent applications as an inventor.
At UCLA, Dr. Hokugo’s research focuses on bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) from the perspectives of osteoimmunology and bone metabolism. He also focuses on wound healing of gingiva and influence of vitamin D insufficiency for alveolar bone healing.
