Mission Quality of Life: The mission of The Weintraub Center is
to develop methods to improve the quality of life for people who have experienced
loss of oral or facial structures due to cancer, trauma or birth
defects. Interdisciplinary research collaborations between investigators
with the basic science expertise and clinical resources will effectively
translate molecular, cellular and organ characteristics of tissue damage
and repair processes into reconstructive approaches for child and adult
patients. Specific initial aims will be to develop a "bench-to-chairside" research
effort featuring the integrated practice of discovery, application, and
clinical assessment. Discovery: The understanding of molecular characteristics
of the tissue damage and repair process is essential in the reconstructive
approach for child and adult patients. As targeted research areas, stem-cell utilization, gene
expression and signal transduction, and nanotechnology are to be investigated with regard to
craniofacial tissue formation, loss and repair. Application: The current advancements of stem cells, nanotechnology,
cellular response to biomaterials, computer aided design and manufacturing,
and gene therapy will be further defined and applied to the preclinical
and clinical trials. Clinical Efficacy: A team of clinical investigators
and psychology experts critically assesses the effect of oral-facial reconstruction
in improving function and quality of life. Outcome: The Weintraub Center represents both an investment in the future of health care and a deep commitment to public service. As the former, it will be a dynamic new complex of laboratories and a 21st-century hub for the advancement of restorative measures for the face and head. It will bring together specialists from a wide variety of disciplines to share knowledge, skills, and technology. This "bench-to-chairside" flow of research combines cutting-edge biology with technology development and provides opportunities for the university and industry.
