From Basic Discoveries to Clinical Advances

The Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology was established in 1998 as the world's first center aiming to develop improved methods for treating patients with oral and facial defects. Renowned basic and clinical scientists from UCLA’s School of Dentistry, Medicine and Engineering work together to bridge the gap between biomedicine and biotechnology. While these experts attack the problem from different vantage points, they are all working toward a common goal: to improve the quality of life for people who have experienced loss of oral or facial structures secondary to cancer trauma or birth defects.

By marshaling the know-how of a wide-ranging group of scientists and clinicians, and fostering an atmosphere in which ideas are exchanged and collaborations forged, the Weintraub Center has facilitated a “bench to chairside” research effort in which laboratory discoveries are rapidly applied to the benefit of patients. This effort consists of three integrated components: Discovery, Application, and Clinical Efficacy. (Our Mission)
