The Center’s research activities have benefited tremendously from the foresight of the original facility planners. A generous area of nearly 2,000 square feet was devoted to basic science laboratories during the construction of the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, providing highly functional space for biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, electrophysiology and biophysiology research. The vision of the Commons is to create a unique research infrastructure allowing ease of collaboration both within and outside of the boundaries of the Center. The Commons, Advanced Communications and Collaboration Facility, will integrate cyberspace technology transfer through web-based database archives, videoconferencing and educational support. With various components of the Commons coming online throughout 2004, its development will be a significant addition to the research infrastructure of the School of Dentistry, providing a unique opportunity and environment for scientists, clinicians and patients to achieve their common goals. As the only comprehensive center for oral and facial rehabilitation in the world, the Center is developing a steady flow of new projects requiring the means for international collaborations. The Commons will support a broad range of interactions to meet this need. The collaborative contributions of UCLA specialists in fields such as head and neck surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiation oncology, maxillofacial prosthodontics orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology provide a rich, interdisciplinary environment to foster this cycle of progress. Together, these disciplines will interrelate in revolutionary ways and comprise a powerful engine for scientific advancement that we believe will become the model for future research in oral-facial reconstruction.
